Melissa Combo is a Longboard Surfing Champion. She is a proud Bunjalung woman from Northern NSW. Surfing is not normally associated with Aboriginal culture, but that’s a misconception. Records show Aboriginal people were surfing on the Northern Beaches of Sydney before colonization. The uncomfortable truths of Australia’s social and political history are evidenced on the hills, above her favourite surfing spot in Ballina, which is the site where 300 Bundjalung people were massacred in 1848.
